Frequently Asked Questions
What is RoboDesigner?
RoboDesigner is a collective name for services and tools provided by Compulab for custom design of SBCs (single-board computers) and Baseboards (SBCs based on CoMs). A highly automated process allows the user to specify required functions, board size, connector type and location, and then receive a functional board that matches his specifications, including Linux installed and supporting all selected functions.
What skills are required from a RoboDesigner user?
RoboDesigner doesn’t require the user to have hardware or software engineering skills. You must have a list of required functions and tentative mechanical specs.
What kind of boards can be developed by RoboDesigner?
The board must contain a computer and peripheral interfaces that appear in the “computer module” library. Try the RoboDesigner application to see which functions the library currently contains.
What if the function I need is not available?
Contact Compulab sales. We offer design services for required functions.
Why use RoboDesigner instead of regular engineering?
RoboDesigner doesn’t require engineering skills, and it saves 95% of development time, effort and costs.
Are resulting custom boards suitable for mass production?
Yes, after an additional preparation and setup process.
How much time is required to specify what I need for my board?
Assuming you are prepared with a list of required specifications, it takes 10 minutes. Seriously.
What are the development costs and how long does it take ?
Use of RoboDesigner tools is free of charge. You can design and keep many versions. When you are satisfied with your design, and you ask to manufacture, Compulab charges a one-time setup fee which ranges between $300 to $2000, depending on the board contents. It usually takes 8 weeks until prototype boards are available. Expedited manufacturing is sometimes possible.
What is the price of my custom board if I want to order more?
Price depends on selected features. It is calculated and displayed by the RoboDesigner application during the design process, and visible from the beginning. Usually it is significantly lower than comparable off-the-shelf products. There are further discounts for volume orders.
What software support does Compulab provide for these custom designs?
All custom boards are shipped with Linux installed and supporting all selected functions.
